The Walk
They walked in silence, side by side, along the gravel path.
Neither of them really knew where they were going, they were just walking, together.
She took a sip of her coffee. He adjusted the zip on his jacket.
There was no rush, there was nowhere they needed to be, no schedule, no pressure. Just the two of them, together.
She peeked up at him, her eyes lingering on the subtle beauty of his face and its features. He sensed her gaze and looked around, only to be dazzled by the smile that spread across her face as their eyes met.
They both turned back to look ahead, refocusing on the path in front of them.
Her cheeks had coloured to a glowing shade of red.
His heart had fluttered and was beating faster than usual.
The atmosphere was crackling with the spark between them - the spark that had always been there.
They were both trying to let it go unacknowledged, something that was proving to be a lot easier said than done. It was impossible to ignore.
She broke the silence for a moment to make a silly comment about an amusing looking seagull which was perched boldly on the wall they were walking alongside.
He chuckled with her briefly, the sound of his laughter harmonising effortlessly with hers.
She took one last gulp of coffee and dropped the empty disposable cup into a bin they wandered passed.
They walked on, speaking softly at random intervals, browsing through random subject matters. There was no agenda, they could just talk about anything that came naturally. Even the silences in between felt like comfortable territory to them. The pauses in conversation allowed them to enjoy the calming sound of the breeze brushing against the surface of the nearby river.
The path continued, curving slightly but with no sign of coming to an end.
Neither of them minded, though. They were just enjoying this time, together.
She was so happy to see him again after so long. He was surprised by how easy it all felt.
It almost seemed like no time had passed at all, there was nothing to make them feel awkward.
She had missed the sound of his voice and the feel of his arms around her. He had missed the warmth of her smile and the kindness of her gentle nature.
They both struggled to deny the fact that there had always been something drawing them together.
Her willpower was dissolving quickly.
His desire to reach out to her was burning brightly.
They approached a small platform of decking which looked out onto the sun-kissed water.
She seemed to have read his mind, because she pulled once on his arm gently as she moved towards it, an invitation for him to follow her. He tried to ignore the butterflies that had risen inside him at her touch. He reached her side at the metal railings that ran along the edge of the wooden boards, leaning against them to steady himself.
They talked some more, their voices low, their bodies closer with every shift of their footing.
She commented on how pretty the view was, she was fascinated by the clear sky reflecting in the natural mirror of the river. He agreed with her, although his own attention was caught by her and the way her eyes were sparkling in the sunlight.
He slid his hand along the rail, until the tips of his fingers were touching hers. It felt like such a normal movement to make, he'd done it without really thinking, but it had so much feeling behind it.
She broke her focus to glance down at their hands together, a distinct tingle running through her skin. She looked up up at him, their eyes meeting once more.
Their hearts were beating so hard and it seemed like they were almost in sync.
Neither of them wanted this feeling to stop.
She reached her hand out to cup his cheek, trying to hide her nerves as her thumb stroked his skin tenderly.
He opened his mouth as if to say something, but found himself lost for words.
This had not been expected by either of them, although it could be argued that it was almost inevitable. It would have been useless to try and fight this back, even if they had wanted to. The intimacy of such a simple moment between them was breath-taking enough on its own. There was nothing that could distract them from each other.
They each studied the other's face, drinking every detail, both of them feeling a need to be closer building more and more. The tension was getting less bearable with each passing second.
In one smooth motion, he took her by the waist and pulled her towards him, their bodies fitting so well together. She let a gasp escape her, but slipped her arms around his neck as he wrapped his around her, holding her safely against him.
Their eyes locked for a second longer before they leaned in, and with an affectionate softness, their lips met.
